d3.js line chart to canvas or cubism.js?

d3.js line chart to canvas or cubism.js?

I created a line graph with d3.js. For that I used this example to implement focus + brushing and after that I used invisible circles for tooltips. Also I get every 3 seconds new data to update my line graph. As I expected the brushing lacks of performance for >5000 datapoints.

I already saw cubism.js as solution for this problem, but I am missing interaction techniques like focus + context with zoom/pan. Is it possibile to extend cubism.js with these features? I couldn’t find any examples for that.
Another solution could be to extend my implementation in d3.js with HTML5s canvas element. Would it be possible to convert the line graph step by step to a canvas element like cubism.js does? I found some first good examples for that (example1, example2), but nothing with a line chart. So I could keep my interaction with good performance.
